Within Baillie Gifford, the Institutional Clients Accounting Department is one of the largest, covering a client base of segregated and pooled investors in both the UK and Overseas areas.  There are almost 60 staff, who are split into small specialist teams.  This means that our clients have one point of contact for administrative support, as well as having a comprehensive cover structure in place if required.

I joined Baillie Gifford in 1995 as an Administration Assistant within the department and was later promoted to the role of Investment Accountant.  In September 2006 I was further promoted to the position of Team Leader, managing a team of investment accountants.  The key areas of the job are what we refer to as the 3 R's:

  • Recording - entries on our accounting system.
  • Reconciling - client records to custodian records.
  • Reporting - to clients monthly, quarterly and on an ad hoc basis as required.

In addition to this and overseeing my team, I participate in a number of projects and initiatives as part of our drive to continually develop the service we provide to our clients.  This is reflected in our department's mission statement:

"To provide and develop a high quality administration service to both internal and external clients."

The department and the firm help me to achieve this by:

  • Excellent training, not just when you join, but throughout your career.
  • Encouraging communication between all members of staff.
  • All management levels providing support and feedback.
  • Continually improving technology (ICAD staff are involved in the testing and implementation of all new systems introduced into the department).

At Baillie Gifford I have had the opportunity to progress, continually improve my skill base and take on new challenges whilst working in a busy, friendly environment.  Social events throughout the year have also been a great opportunity to meet new people and try new activities which I may not have got involved in otherwise!
