Graduate Careers - Information Technology

Please be aware that the recruitment process for the 2008 programme has now closed, and will reopen again for our 2009 programme in November 2008.

Baillie Gifford depend heavily upon systems to provide the high quality service that our clients demand.  Over the last ten years a great deal of emphasis has been placed on technological advancement to drive portfolio management, trading, client reporting and performance measurement.  Consequently the IT department has grown substantially in that time and now is staffed by around 80 employees.  We have an established graduate recruitment programme and offer careers in Application Development or Technical Infrastructure.  High calibre graduates will enjoy working with the latest technology in a busy, but relaxed environment.

Application Development
Our development team works closely with users to design and build mission critical systems.  The developer role covers the full life cycle from analysis through to implementation and ongoing support.  Candidates require strong analytical skills, some experience of programming and an interest in the financial sector.  We work with current development software & technology including Oracle 10G, PL/SQL, Microsoft.Net, C#, Forms 6i and VisualBasic6.  Full training on all of our software and systems will be provided.

Technical Infrastructure
Our team of infrastructure experts help to keep the whole IT operation working smoothly and efficiently.  Working with the latest desktop (Dell), server (Dell & EMC) and networking/telecoms (Cisco) technologies, the infrastructure team manage a complex computing environment for around 550 users in three offices across the world. Candidates should have an interest in hardware and networking topologies and preferably some experience of Microsoft Windows, Office and popular PC packages.

What We Look For
We are looking for two individuals with consistently high academic achievement, a recent (or expected) good degree in any IT (or related) discipline, and evidence that you do more in your spare time than study!  Personal qualities are equally as important as academic achievement.  Enthusiasm, common sense and strong interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to think on your feet and digest detail.

What We Can Offer You
Baillie Gifford is a meritocratic firm, in which individual achievement is both recognised and well rewarded.  Our salaries and conditions of employment are excellent.  We offer attractive salaries which are continually being reviewed. You would also participate in the firm’s bonus scheme where a bonus of up to 10% of your salary is paid each year.  Your annual holiday entitlement will be 25 days, plus the nine public holidays.  We also have an excellent pension scheme.

We pride ourselves on having developed a culture where individuals flourish while benefiting from the support of strong team-based structures.  If you are interested in a graduate position within our systems department please visit our How to Apply page.
