"I joined Baillie Gifford straight from university and ten years later was thrilled to be made a partner."

Why Baillie Gifford?
Baillie Gifford's location in Edinburgh, combined with the partnership structure and business success, meant that the firm was a natural choice when looking for a job in fund management.

What was year one like?
On-the-job training by more senior analysts was a strong basis from which to grow.  In addition, being given a large amount of input to investment decisions at a relatively early stage built up my confidence.  An introduction to other areas of the firm such as the back office allowed me to form a picture of what Baillie Gifford is all about: this certainly helped in future years when required to speak to existing and prospective clients.

What about Training?
I was given adequate study leave to prepare for professional exams and since then have been encouraged to further other skills such as IT and personal development.

Positive Experiences
Certainly one of the most productive and privileged parts of my job is meeting the top management of leading Japanese companies.  On a more personal basis, successfully combining a young family with work has been aided by sympathetic management and the relatively small size of Edinburgh - small that is in relation to its deserved reputation as a major financial centre.

What have you achieved?
I joined Baillie Gifford straight from university and ten years later was thrilled to be made a partner.  On the way I have made my share of successful (and not so successful) investments, learnt the importance of excellence in client liaison, and built up a lasting respect for good friends and colleagues at Baillie Gifford.
