Long Term Global Growth

Long Term Global Growth is a stock-driven equity strategy focused on exceptional companies. We invest long-term in listed firms whose innovative leadership gives them scope to grow to many multiples of their current size.

Landscape of a still rippled ocean at dusk in mild weather with clouds across the sky.

Curiosity, patience and bravery

We aim to deliver a concentrated portfolio of transformational companies. We embrace extreme payoffs by staying optimistic about the future. We expect this to continue amid structural changes in the years ahead.

Long Term Global Growth Strategy

Investment manager, Mark Urquhart, discusses the Baillie Gifford Long Term Global Growth Strategy.

A selective strategy

The Strategy was established in 2004. Our highly selective stock-driven approach has always focused on taking committed, long-term holdings in a concentrated collection of some exceptional growth companies from around the world.

Our focus on innovation and our desire to align our clients’ capital with long-term management teams lend a tilt towards the world’s most adaptable businesses.

This investment approach is consistent with outperforming a typical global equity benchmark by circa 3 per cent per annum, net of fees, over the long term.

The performance target is aspirational and is not guaranteed. We don’t use it to compile the portfolio and returns will vary. A single performance target may not be appropriate across all vehicles and jurisdictions. We may not meet our investment objectives if, for example, our growth investment style is out of favour, or we misjudge the long-term earnings growth of our holdings.

A concentrated, resilient portfolio

Unlike most of our peers, we embrace asymmetry by investing in firms with uncertain but potentially big payoffs. This often skews position sizes – winners can reach 10 per cent of the portfolio. The portfolio is concentrated, holding 30-40 stocks.

We think in decades, not quarters, which means low turnover: our average holding period is around eight years.

The portfolio should be resilient in a world changing faster than many risk models recognise. Because it’s nothing like any index, volatility is expected over short periods.

We believe that the rewards to the champions of change can far outweigh the losses of incumbents: the best feature of equities is the unlimited upside.
