1. We recognise that charity clients have specific requirements and varied priorities, and we offer a wide range of investment strategies and approaches to address our clients’ needs. Some appoint us for specialist global equity or multi asset mandates, whilst others invest in a combination of strategies to meet their overall objectives.

All our investment offerings are underpinned by our long term approach to investment and this, together with our focus on building lasting relationships, is made possible by our stability as a partnership, wholly owned by partners who work in the firm.

We emphasise good stewardship and investing for sustainable growth in all that we do, and also offer a range of approaches with a particular emphasis on investing ethically, responsibly and with impact, in line with our clients’ requirements. A number of our strategies are introduced below and our full fund range can be accessed via the menu tab above.

  4. Income

At Baillie Gifford we emphasise long term income not short term yield. For equity income portfolios, we believe that it is essential to invest across the broadest opportunity set, and to seek both dependability and growth at the stock level in order to deliver the dependability of income and  growth in income and capital that our clients seek. We also emphasise the importance of diversification, both within and across asset classes, and offer a range of equity and multi asset funds for income focussed clients.

  5. Income strategies

The focus is on the long term, rather than short-term yield

Generating a sustainable and potentially rising real income requires more than simply holding high-dividend paying stocks. We combine stocks with higher yield than the market with an element of growth that we believe will secure the income of tomorrow.

    Typical Number of Holdings: 50-80
Maximum Stock Position: Capital 6%, Income 5%
    Benchmark: FTSE All World Index
Objective: +1-2% p.a. over benchmark over rolling five year periods

Seeking real income, time after time.

Sustainable Income prioritises long-term sustainable income over high short-term yields. The strategy combines active allocation across a broad range of assets with global security selection to achieve its aims: to produce monthly income, whilst seeking to maintain the value of that income and of capital in line with inflation (UK CPI) over five-year periods.

  6. Responsible and impact investment

We believe there is strong alignment between good Environmental, Social and Governance practices and achieving the best investment returns for our clients over time. Furthermore, we understand that many charity clients have additional requirements, ranging from excluding certain areas from which they do not wish to profit, through to aligning profit with purpose in areas such as Healthcare, to investing in a way which prioritises assisting the transition to a low carbon economy. Many of our strategies are well aligned with the requirements of such clients.

We have been signatories of the UN Principles of Responsible Investment since 2007 (receiving the top rating in many areas), are signatories of the UK Stewardship Code and aim to contribute to the development of industry best practice.

  7. Responsible and impact investment strategies

Investing in companies that exert a positive influence on society and operate with integrity

The portfolio is constructed to address four themes: Social Inclusion and Education; Environment and Resource Needs, Healthcare and Quality of Life; and Base of the Pyramid – where companies are addressing basic human needs. We stringently monitor the social impact and financial performance of companies in the portfolio. We believe not only that investment can be used as a powerful force for good, but that companies that exhibit positive social values are increasingly likely to also be the winning investments of the future.

    Typical Number of Holdings: 25-50
    Maximum Stock Position: 10%
    Benchmark: MSCI AC World Index
Objective: +2% p.a. ahead of global stock markets over rolling five year periods

Seeking enduring growth that delivers enduring good

Sustainable Growth aims to invest in companies that can sustain meaningful profit growth for long periods while also making a lasting difference for society. We believe these two elements are mutually reinforcing, allowing us to build a portfolio that is sustainable in both senses of the word and maximising our chances of outperformance. Typical Number of Holdings: 55-80
    Maximum Stock Position: 5%

Investing in the most exciting growth companies, transforming the experience of Human Health

Health Innovation targets companies utilising the convergence of technology, driving a revolution in the understanding, prevention, detection and treatment of disease as well as increasing the operational effectiveness of health infrastructure. We see the future of health focussed on prevention of disease and the personalisation of treatments, rather than treating patients when they are already ill. We achieve this by running a concentrated portfolio, containing the best companies (agnostic to sector) with the potential to become outliers in a sector ripe for disruption. We embrace asymmetry and run winners to maximise returns for our clients over a long-term investment horizon.

    Typical Number of Holdings: 25-50
