Capital at risk

Private growth investing

Some of the world’s most disruptive and rapidly growing businesses are privately owned. We invest on your behalf in a select number of private growth companies with the ambition and potential to become generational leaders.

Approach

Public markets have changed. Greater availability of private capital means companies can fund more of their growth away from the public markets’ quarterly reporting cycle. The average age of a company at initial public offering (IPO) is now 11 years, up from 7 years a decade ago.

Private markets therefore contain a growing number of those businesses that are developing new business models and disrupting industries. We seek to give our clients access to fast-growing companies with a proven product, across sectors and geographies. We then use our network and experience to support them as they scale.

Our private growth track record since 2012

Approach

Global, unconstrained

A proven track record

We invest in category-defining private growth companies – from SpaceX and Databricks to Stripe – as well as businesses beyond the traditional venture ecosystem, where we believe they can become generational winners.

With a heritage in public markets, we take a long-term approach: we’ve held investments in Amazon, ASML and Tesla for more than a decade and stayed invested through volatility. Our public-markets mandates also allow us to remain invested after IPO, and we retain significant holdings in Affirm, Alibaba, Spotify, Tempus AI and Wise.

The private/public advantage

Our public market heritage provides us with a distinct, enduring advantage in private investing:

 • Pattern recognition: More than 100 years of investing in transformational companies, and the accumulated knowledge of around 130 growth investors across the firm
 • Exceptional deal origination: Over 80 per cent of deals sourced from our unique network
 • Preferred partner: Toolkit and people to enable transition to the public markets

Access to leading private companies is competitive. Businesses are selective about who they partner with and look for shareholders who can support their long-term ambitions. We aim to be a trusted long-term partner for ambitious founders and management teams, bringing our experience and network to support their growth journey.

Private growth: Looking over the overlooked

Brian Kelly, investment specialist, details why private growth has emerged as a distinct, attractive asset class. He explains why fast-revenue growth is the main driver of returns and how growth managers can support exceptional companies on their growth journey.

As with any investment, your capital is at risk.

Peter Singlehurst: What if the most exciting investment opportunities of our time weren’t listed on any stock exchange. There’s been a quiet but profound structural shift in how the world’s most ambitious companies grow. They’re choosing to stay private for longer. This isn't a trend. It’s the new landscape. Just a decade ago, the billion dollar private company was rare – the unicorn. Today, there are nearly 1,500 of them, creating a $4.5tn investable universe that is simply too important to ignore.

This is the foundation of our private company strategy at Baillie Gifford, designed to give clients access to the world’s most ambitious private businesses as they scale and reshape industries. By staying private, these companies escape the pressure of quarterly earnings. They can focus on what truly matters: long-term vision, disruptive innovation and sustainable growth. This is where tomorrow is being built,

in fields from artificial intelligence and quantum computing to new frontiers in space and healthcare. At Baillie Gifford, our approach is built on a single powerful idea. We are specialists in growth. It's in our DNA. With over a century of experience in public markets and more than a decade investing in private ones, we bring a rare depth of perspective to this evolving space.

Our strength lies in the quality of our relationships. Our patient long-term mindset and our ability to recognise inflection points. Those pivotal moments when a proven idea is ready to become a great global business. Unlike traditional venture capital, we don't shape the initial idea. Instead, we provide the patient strategic capital that helps it scale. But our contribution is more than just capital.

We become a true long-term partner. We open our deep global network and share the invaluable lessons learned from helping companies navigate the challenges of growing and the journey to an IPO. As resolute global generalists, our search for these companies is unconstrained by sector or geography, allowing us to find enduring opportunities wherever they emerge. The investing landscape has changed.

Both companies and investors need to recognise and adapt to this new reality. These are the companies building the future and, through Baillie Gifford’s private companies strategy, we give clients the chance to grow with them.

Risk factors

The views expressed should not be considered as advice or a recommendation to buy, sell or hold a particular investment.
