Mentoring

Building relationships

Mentoring is fundamental to the support framework offered at Baillie Gifford, reflecting our shared belief that the company should be an engaging and progressive place to work. Five of our people share what the mentor/mentee relationship means to them.

It’s been a privilege to mentor some amazingly talented people over the years. Supporting mentees in unlocking their potential is rewarding in the short term but most fulfilling in the long term. Knowing you played even a small role in mentees’ careers going from strength to strength is very satisfying.

I quickly learned that the best mentoring relationships are those where we learn from each other. My style might not work for others, so openness and a safe space are essential for both parties to figure out if a mentoring relationship is working or whether it has run its course.

I am fortunate to have enjoyed top-quality mentoring internally and externally, and to have mentored folks inside and outside of Baillie Gifford. At the end of the day, we all want to live in a world we have helped build and working with other people to achieve that is the reward.

Mentoring has been invaluable to me. I was fortunate to have a mentor during my graduate programme who not only offered guidance, support, and a safe space to discuss both professional and personal challenges but also inspired development beyond just work. Their guidance was instrumental in building my confidence and empowered growth, while also encouraging self-reflection.

My mentor has really shown me how important open communication is. She brings her relevant expertise and a willingness to share knowledge, alongside a genuine passion for supporting others’ growth. She provides invaluable support, helping me to build confidence and develop skills I might not have discovered on my own.

Mentoring has provided an opportunity to support others in achieving their goals or overcoming challenges in a confidential, structured environment. I’ve worked with amazing people across the firm. And being a mentor has reshaped my own management, coaching and communication approach via the high-quality training. It’s a unique, rewarding experience.
