Getting off to a good start
Ian Carruthers is a Trader in our Trading Department.

In 2021, I embraced the joys and challenges of parenthood by taking six months of parental leave. This period was a remarkable opportunity to bond with my family, despite the inherent challenges of new parenthood. It deepened my understanding of the difficulties those away from work for extended periods face, regardless of the reason.
Initially, I was uncertain about how much parental leave to take. I was concerned about its potential impact on my career and what would be considered an appropriate amount, as taking extended parental leave is less common for men.
Talent on leave
My career remained unaffected, and I returned to a supportive environment from my team and the firm. The Talent on Leave sessions through the Working Families and Carers Network were invaluable, guiding me on what to expect and helping me plan my return. They advised maintaining communication with my team in a way that felt appropriate, which I did through occasional Zoom catch-ups to stay connected.
Colleagues who had previously taken parental leave reassured me of its benefits, dispelling my initial hesitancy. Returning to work was seamless, thanks to staying in touch with my team. The returning to work sessions allowed me to share experiences with other parents, easing the transition.

Making memories
In 2023, we were fortunate to welcome another daughter to the family. We relived similar and new experiences while juggling two children. Once again, having the opportunity to take extended paid leave was invaluable. It allowed me to be a more supportive parent and share more early stages and memories than I would have been previously afforded.
The current flexibility offered by Baillie Gifford greatly aids in balancing work and family life, with occasional remote work facilitating the juggling of responsibilities. There are misconceptions about the impact of leave on career opportunities, but my experience has been positive.
Taking your leave
Parental leave fosters new skills and perspectives, and I believe it's crucial for men to take leave to ensure equal opportunities and diminish career gaps. I encourage my colleagues at Baillie Gifford to take advantage of the available time off, as it offers a unique opportunity.
